I remember being a teenager and thinking that 30 sounded so old and seemed so far away. Now that I am almost thirty myself, I’m realizing that it’s really not so bad. I still feel young and I still have a lot of experiences and life ahead of me. Most of my friends were born in the same year as me so we’re all approaching this milestone together. Most of them are not too thrilled with the thought that thirty is quickly approaching.
For me, twentyfive was the tough one. By the time I hit my quarter of a century birthday I was nowhere near where I wanted to be in life. I graduated college two years late, I had just lost my job and after months of searching for steady employment with no luck, I had to move back home because my part-time waitressing salary and freelance writing gigs just weren’t paying the bills. I felt defeated. My friends had good steady jobs, awesome apartments and we’re getting engaged. All while I was moving back home with no career path in sight.
I felt like such a failure and all the things I thought I would have at this point seemed so far out of sight. But looking back, I realize that if all that didn’t happen then I may not be where I am today. Since then, I found a full-time job, got promoted twice, my boyfriend (now husband) and I bought a house, got engaged and have now been married almost a year. It was crazy how quickly things started to fall into place. I had to work really hard to do things like find a job, promote and save for a house but I think it helps me to appreciate what I have a lot more.
I’m actually pretty excited to turn thirty. I can’t help but think of the infamous chant from 13 Going on Thirty. Thirty, Flirty and Thriving. Well I’m married so I’m not exactly flirty these days but I do feel like I’m thriving. Now my life is no where near perfect. I have my bad days where I feel like I’m not doing enough or I could do better and over time I’m sure there are somethings I will want to change, but for the most part I’m pretty satisfied with what I have accomplished and where I am in my life. I have a job, a home and amazing friends and family. So I would say that I’m doing alright.
With that said, I thought it would be fun to challenge myself this upcoming year. I decided to make of list of twenty-nine things to do before I turn thirty. I may or not be able to accomplish all of these this year. Let’s be real, similar to New Year’s Resolutions, these types of lists can be over ambitious and sometimes life just happens. But I’m going to do my best and see how many things I can check off the list by this time next year. Here goes nothing!
